Looking Back at 2011: The Beers We Enjoyed Most (Haiku-Style)

10. Hitachino Nest White Ale
Intriguingly crisp.
Interesting spiced finish.
And world's best label.

Booze...in 50 Words or Less: Philadelphia Brewing Company Newbold IPA

Philadelphia Brewing Company Newbold IPA
Not going to say that this is one of the best IPAs I’ve had recently. That would be deceitful. Still, it's a worthy offering from a brewer in the heart of Philadelphia. Abundant hop flavor jumps out. What it’s missing is another flavor to make the main ingredient pop.

King of the Case: Philadelphia Brewing Company

Wherein I will buy a variety case and decide what the best beer in it is.

Philadelphia Brewing Company

Kenzinger

A very straightforward session beer that is uncomplicated, yet not boring. Incredibly crisp. Could easily drink several in a row. There's a nice little floral kick in the finish. Probably the Noble hops that are stated in the recipe. I'll give it a slight downgrade for a bit of an aftertaste, but would give it high grades as a good craft-beer intro piece.

Pennsylvania Pale Ale
Crisp flavor with sizable hops. More floral punch, almost (but just short of) a little musty. A nice combination of light and hefty.

Booze...in 50 Words or Less: Philadelphia Brewing Company Harvest from the Hood

Philadelphia Brewing Company Harvest from the Hood
There's definitely floral flavor emanating from this wet hop ale by the underdog of Philly-based breweries. Unfortunately, unlike their stellar Fleur de Lehigh, this exotic-tasting beverage results in an aftertaste that affects the enjoyment slightly. It's intriguing, with definite potential. Still, slight disappointment.

Booze...in 50 Words or Less: Rogue John John Ale

Rogue John John Ale
A very interesting beer. The pale ale features the sprucey taste and scent of Yards' distinctive Tavern Spruce with the flowery trace that defines Philadelphia Brewing Company's Fleur de Lehigh. However, it falls somewhere beneath both of those beers. Flavors simply aren't as vibrant, nor the scent as immediately impactful.

Booze...in 50 Words or Less: Philadelphia Brewing Company Winter Wunder

Philadelphia Brewing Company Winter Wunder
The whole time I was drinking this spiced ale I was trying to figure out which beer it resembled. It's a complex, sour beer. The spices are subtle and difficult to identify. Had a wine-like, vinegary feel. Got it: It's like Hitachino Red Rice Ale (only not as good).
