Brewery Ommegang Hennepin
An absolutely classic beer from the upstate New York brewery. Everything's right about it, from the color to the scent to the flavor. There's something that resembles banana. A major hit of citrus as well. It's a complex beer, but it's also simplistic and refreshing. A perfect specimen.

Ommegang Adoration Ale
Ordered one of these the other night. Was served in what I believe would be called a snifter. Hate that. I'd rather pay more for full pint. But maybe they did me a favor. This is a hard-hitting Belgian with notes of banana and citrus. Not to be gulped.

Flying Fish Grand Cru Winter Reserve
When you consider that I spent many years as a resident of Cinnaminson, New Jersey, it's probably a bit surprising that I have never visited Cherry Hill's Flying Fish Brewery. Gotta get it on the itinerary. It's a classic Belgian with citrusy notes. Lighter than legends Chimay or Ommegang.

Growler Wars: Dogfish Head vs. Manayunk Brewing Company

Two growlers. Two beers. Two frosted glasses. One winner.


Dogfish Head Raison D'etre
Very strong taste upon first sip. Has a bit of a Belgian feel to it, but not exactly as clear as a Chimay or an Ommegang. Has a little bit of a stale scent to it. Doesn't go down as easy as I would like. Almost seems a bit bitter. All in all, not my favorite Dogfish Head beer.

Because every once in a while you need a beer that requires the popping of a cork. This Belgian-style amber packs a serious punch via its pleasing scent and robust, spicy (almost smoky) flavor. Best reason to go to Cooperstown since the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Making "Friends": The Pizza Project Reviews Barry's Yawnin' in the Dawnin'

So we got an e-mail the other day from a fellow named Bradford Barry. He said he was a member of a band named simply - in a move out of the Van Halen playbook - Barry. He had noticed some of the album review work we had done on The Pizza Project, and he wondered if we would be interested in reviewing the EP his band, a group of three brothers from Hume, New York, had put together.

Now the fact of the matter is I wanted to dismiss this request straight away. I am a busy man. If I have free time, I am either going to enjoy it by spending time with my wife and son, reading some fine prose by Joyce or Tolstoy, or working my cardiovascular system in an intense yet heart-healthy fashion (oh, who am I kidding; I would most likely be at the Wegman’s looking for a beer I haven’t tasted before). But then I noticed something. It turned out that Mr. Bradford Barry had done something very, very, very...savvy: He kissed my arse. Appealed to my ego. And I am pretty much a raging egomaniac.
