Beer Week 50 Word Special: Via Marconi Sports Bar & Restaurant

The following beers were consumed at Via Marconi Sports Bar & Restaurant during a Beer Week visit.

Dogfish Head Robert Johnson's Hellhound on My Ale
Beer was named after the legendary blues musician who alledgedly sold his soul to the Devil for the ability to play a mean guitar. Awesome. Perfect balance of hops and malt. Love the glass it was served in! A heavy, freaking goblet! Type of simple, effective beer Dogfish frequently avoids.

Dogfish Head Pearl Jam Twenty Faithfull Ale
Wasn't a Pearl Jam man. Or, I should say, I didn't think they won the Pearl Jam vs. Nirvana battle that divided America in the early 90s until Cobain exited stage left. They were OK. Like this weak, slightly winish beer. Maybe if it had been named after Kurt's band.

Port Brewing Mongo Double IPA
As I was drinking, wondered if it was a double IPA. Hops seemed too understated if it was (it was). Pours color between golden and amber. While it's somewhat light for my linking, it has an interesting makeup: California citrus kick emerges in finish rather than on surface.

Booze...in 50 Words or Less: Cricket Hill Brewing Company American Ale

Cricket Hill American Ale
In color, it is almost a brown ale. Not a very appealing scent. Malts are the element that jumps out most. Hops are there, but not a very good balance. There's not much in the way of supporting flavors here. It's a straightforward beer and not an exceptional one.

Round Guys Original Slacker Ale
Since I had no idea who the makers of this were prior to ordering (they're a brewery in Lansdale, Pennsylvania), was prepared to write off at first sip. But it's quality, with some really interesting composition. Drinks like simple ale, but with major rush of chocolate and malt in finish.

Williamsburg Alewerks Tavern Ale
When I first sipped this one, was expecting something light. Lageresque. Instead, it's smoky, malty, and extremely porterish (second really cool fake word made up for this post!). While part of enjoyment came from low expectations, definitely enjoyed the complexity and depth. Strong, but not overbearing!

Smithwick's
Other night, a friend was drinking Guinness, saying he was "getting ready for St. Patrick's Day." While I don't go crazy for St. Patty's, I figured I'd attempt to get into the spirit by drinking this ale from the makers of Guinness. Offers fairly lively malt flavor, but that's it.

Ommegang Adoration Ale
Ordered one of these the other night. Was served in what I believe would be called a snifter. Hate that. I'd rather pay more for full pint. But maybe they did me a favor. This is a hard-hitting Belgian with notes of banana and citrus. Not to be gulped.

Ithaca Cold Front Belgian-Style Amber Ale
For a beer I bought simply to make sure the wife had something to drink (she sure likes Belgians), I sure was impressed by this. What a combination of interesting flavors! Not only does it have that classic Belgian feel, it also features the smoky bitterness of a stellar brown.

Went to a party the other night. Had to buy beverages. Bought a six-pack of this brew for the third time in three weeks. If it were up to me, I would never buy the same beer twice. There's something about this one. Definite beer of the moment.
