Booze...in 50 Words or Less: Voodoo Brewing Company Wynona's Big Brown Ale

Voodoo Brewing Company Wynona's Big Brown Ale
I know a bit about beer, but you learn something new every day. Today, learned that Voodoo Brewing Company isn't from Louisiana. It's based in Meadville, Pa. Its brown is vibrant and flavorful, with a malty scent, a smoky finish, and a kick that approaches stout level without going overboard.

Booze...in 50 Words or Less: Port Brewing Midnight Expression Lager

Port Brewing Midnight Expression Lager
Thought I was grabbing a 22-ounce Port Brewing Wipeout IPA. Get up to counter. Notice I picked up wrong one. I'm adventurous! Decided I'd just try this instead. Bad choice. No idea why it is called a lager. It's really just a thin stout. How about full disclosure, people!?

The Blue Route Taco Truck at Whole Foods: Eat the Tacos, but Hold the Chicken

There was a time when I probably would not have been caught dead in a Whole Foods. They quite simply did not have enough unhealthy options for my fat-and-sugar-loving palette. But now that the wife has me eating healthy (fruits and vegetables can taste good; how about that), I find myself going there a little more often. Plus, the fact that they serve beer not only in six-packs, but incredibly cheap growlers helps.

Well, add one more line to that list of reasons not to dread going to Whole Foods: they have tacos!

This past Thursday, the wife, myself, and Saucy Jr. checked out the Blue Route Taco Truck, a charmingly underadvertised haven for the taco lover on the roof of the market chain's Plymouth Meeting store. They had a Happy Hour deal (one that I believe will still be going on every Thursday for a few more weeks) from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. where you could get three tacos for five dollars as well as one of their selection of canned beers for $1.99, and we figured, "Heck, why not? It's fun for three people to eat for less than $14. Let's give it a try."

Growler Wars: Dogfish Head vs. Manayunk Brewing Company

Two growlers. Two beers. Two frosted glasses. One winner.

Dogfish Head Raison D'etre
Very strong taste upon first sip. Has a bit of a Belgian feel to it, but not exactly as clear as a Chimay or an Ommegang. Has a little bit of a stale scent to it. Doesn't go down as easy as I would like. Almost seems a bit bitter. All in all, not my favorite Dogfish Head beer.

The Freezer Case: 365 Everyday Value Uncured Pepperoni Pizza

Hey, if Kim Kardashian can get her pie
on after Pilates, no reason why I can't.
Must be why we look so similar ...
As Pilates night has quickly become frozen pizza night at the McGilliguddy residence, we have another freezer case review for you: Whole Foods' 365 Everyday Value Uncured Pepperoni Pizza. Kind of ironic that I top off an excruciating hour-long workout by stuffing my face with pizza, but I suppose this one must have been at least a tad healthy, since it is from Whole Foods, right?

Healthy or not, it certainly was delicious! It looked a bit small in diameter when I first put it in the oven, but since we were dining after the nibble's bedtime, it ended up being just the right amount for the two of us. With an ample amount of flavorful sauce topped with the tastiest pepperoni and a layer of gooey-but-not-greasy cheese, the pie was delectable - one of the best frozens we've ever tasted! The uncured peperoni had a bit of zing to it and the toppings were spread to the edge of the crust, so much so that there was no leftover crust remaining on the hubby's plate - definitely a rarity for a frozen. The crust was hearty, but not too doughy or dense. Probably even better than the crust on the pie we enjoyed at the Cold Point Pub last weekend.

In summary, it was delish and we will definitely be getting it again. Although if we're eating with the nibble, we'll probably need a second pie ...

Whole Foods—Pig in lipstick not tested on animals

After a quick trip to David's Bridal with my gals in my wedding party, we headed over to the Whole Foods in Plymouth Meeting to finally check out what all the hubbub was about their Cold Point Pub.

I am not quite sure when dining at the grocery store originated. Quite frankly, when I grew up in the 80s and 90s, we looked down on people popping grapes off displays and heaven forbid if you actually opened packaging! People crunching on potato chips halfway through the store would send my mother into a tizzy and later me, too. To eat and shop was not only dirty and germy, but flat out uncouth in our camp. I chalked it up mostly to the fact that these people were stealing or about to attempt theft. I mean, were these people actually going to hand the high school student clerk an empty bag of Fritos and say, "They were so good, I couldn't wait. But dang, I'll pay for them now."? Really? I mean really? Not at the Norristown Genuardi's, that's fo' sho'.
